A Fragile Political System
Imagine for a moment, that instead of having our current political system we had an even more corrupt system. One where special interests hold control over the entire government. How would that look? We would probably have major corporations controlling our food supply, energy grid, transportation systems, and communication networks. These corporations would also have absolute control over every aspect of the government, including the courts, the military, federal banking, and health-care systems. Their power would extend outside the government, reaching the education system, religion and personal lives.
In North Korea, the government, the economy, the military and people’s lives are directly controlled by Kim Jong-un, his family, and his circle of close friends. They brainwash citizen’s mind with fake propaganda and strict alienation from the rest of the world.
According to The Economist, North Korea ranks as the least democratic country in the world. The Wall Street Journal reports they have the least amount of economic freedom, and the Walk Free Foundation’s Global Slavery Index shows North Korea has the highest proportion of people in modern slavery. North Korea is the 12th most corrupt country, and is second to last in freedom of press. (1)
Different regimes and governments rule with different objectives. Some focus on world domination, others focus on national pride. Many prioritize the wellbeing of the ruling class, and just a handful seem to be sincerely concerned and proactive about the care of all their citizens. These individualistic governmental system create instability across the globe. Countries can’t fully trust each other, and that is a huge problem.
Given the fragile state of the global economy, and the environment, it is possible that entire countries could experience food shortages at any moment. Think about what happened in Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria, and the effects of Kilauea’s volcanic eruptions in the Big Island of Hawaii. Our food supply is something we just can’t take for granted.
Raw vegan and fruit based diets could be a sustainable way to ensure food security around the globe. This stability is essential to sustaining peaceful relationships across borders. If international relations are so fragile in today’s world of abundance, imagine what they would be like if we had a serious food crisis around the earth.
