The Fruitarian Journey
My self-healing journey has been full of ups and downs, twists and turns. From California to Colorado, to Hawaii and then Ecuador. From living in the tropics to returning to the Rocky Mountains. From a life as a farmer in the Hawaiian jungle, to working as a health coach in the city of Boulder. Adaptability has been more than a need, it has been the driving force behind the research that supports this book.
After learning about fruitarianism, I spent three months in Colorado experimenting with this the fruitarian diet. It didn’t take long to realize that, to pursue a fruit based lifestyle, my best option was to move to the tropics. Soon after, I bought a ticket to Hawaii, packed my bags and got in the plane.
I spent most of my time in Hawaii living in a raw vegan community. The support I received there allowed me to follow a strict raw vegan diet for almost three months. Most of my meals consisted of nothing but fruit. I even spent two weeks eating nothing but papayas. It was a mind bending experience, full of self-empowerment and dreams of a better future.
During my time in Hawaii I noticed that cooked foods are unlikely to be a requirement for a healthy life. I saw that cooked foods can be a distraction, used to numb thoughts and feelings.
My time spent in Ecuador was similar to Hawaii, but much more isolated. While traveling through Vilcabamba and Cuena, I adhered to a raw fruits and vegetables for more than two months. Most of this time was spent on researching and writing this book. My other pastimes included hiking and lifting weights. I was curious to test how much energy I had, and how much muscle I could build on a raw vegan and fruit based diet.
Did I see this coming? Not by a long shot. When I moved to Colorado four years ago I came with the intention to settle down. I had been moving my home for more than a decade and was ready to set roots, buy a property and focus on my career. Destiny had other plans for me.
My passion for learning has lead me deep down the rabbit whole. I remember asking myself, “How could a human live eating nothing but fruit?”, three months later I was in full transition. It’s a tricky path, doubts and temptations crowd the road. I was lucky to receive a fair share of support from teachers, friends and family members. They may not always know what is best for me, but they truly care. For all of them, I am ever grateful.
Raw vegan and fruit based diets are complex in their simplicity, it can be hard to remain on track. Consuming organic fresh fruit provides me with energy to work, exercise, play and feel good. Sometimes I crave other food, but these cravings are weaker than they used to. I am not sure if I will end up eating nothing but fruit for the rest of my life, only time will tell.
