Staying Warm in Winter
There are other tips to follow raw vegan and fruit based diets during the colder months. Here are a few:
Tip 1: If you make vegetables juice, it is useful to include some ginger. It goes well with juices that contain apples, celery, cucumbers or carrots. Other warming spices to add include cinnamon, nutmeg, and pepper.
Tip 2: Exercises to move your blood. This is important in the morning, and in the evening before bed. You can do a medium-to-intense workout in the morning, that will warm you right away. On the evening you can do a medium-to-light workout, to generate heat before going to sleep.
Tip 3: Dress with layers. This is a no-brainer. If you want to feel warm, you have to stay warm. Keep your socks on, wear warm shoes, put on long thick pants, and have a jacket on whenever it gets chilly. If you go outside, it is best to put on a hat or a hoodie, to contain body heat.
Tip 4: Don’t eat fruit from the fridge. If you have food on the fridge, it is best to place it on the counter before eating it, so it has time to warm up to room temperature. Eating fruit straight from the fridge will have a cooling effect. Don’t drink cold water either.
Tip 5: Eat enough. During winter time, you may want to pack in as many calories as you can. Overeating is not necessary, but we don’t want to feel hungry, or be running on empty, when we need energy to stay warm.
Tip 6: Pack on the fat. Along with eating many calories, you may also want to include more fat on your diet during winter. This can come in the form of avocados and olives. Eating fat will help you gain fat, which in turn will add more insulation to your body, helping you retain heat.
Tip 7: Spend as much time as possible in the sun. It will warm you and give you energy throughout the day. Bonus points for sun-gazing at sunrise and sunset.
Tip 8: Drink herbal tea, especially in the morning and at night. It’s a great way to warm up your body and help you feel cozy.
Tip 9: Hang around by the fire. Spending time around the fire will help warm your body and uplift your spirit.
Tip 10: Don’t be stingy with the heating system. A lot of people spend too much time feeling cold at home, because they don’t want to spend extra on their electricity bill. I think it is great to save money and save energy, we should all focus on that, but there is a limit to what we can tolerate.
Tip 11: Stay warm at night by using lots of blankets in bed.
Tip 12: Get a cuddle buddy for those cold nights in winter. Having someone to hug in bed will be useful to stay warm. If you don’t have a partner, this may be a good excuse to get one. : )
Tip 13: Save your cooling foods for warmer days, and get used to eating warming foods in the mornings and evenings, when it’s colder.
Tip 14: Use cooked foods when needed. Some cold evenings may be too intense to stay fully raw. Excellent options include gourds, and root vegetables such as sweet potatoes and carrots.
Tip 15: Consume food high on Vitamin C. This is useful to help prevent and fight the common cold.
Tip 16: Start a breathing practice, or a cold tolerance training program like the Wim Hof Method.
Tip 17: Consider moving to the tropics, winters in Hawaii ain’t so cold.
