Problems with Fruit Based Diets
To stay in balance, I must admit that there are a handful of potential issues regarding fruit based diets. One of them being that these diets are quite new, and have not yet been properly tested in clinical settings. The lack of scientific evidence supporting beneficial claims regarding fruit-based diets allows plenty of room for skepticism.
Another area for concern with fruit based diets is their potential to cause long-term deficiencies of vitamins and minerals such as B-12, Iron and Calcium. This hasn’t been proved yet, but is one of many arguments against these diets.
Finally, due to various socio-economic, regional and environmental factors, organic fruit production is rather scarce around the world, especially in industrialized countries. This, in part, is due to the huge demand for animal products and processed foods, which take most of our food production resources. This results in fresh fruit becoming overly expensive, or unavailable, to most people with limited resources.
Limited access to fruit is a sad reality, even in tropical places like Ecuador. In such countries, we would expect to find fresh fruit available in abundance, and at affordable prices. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case, with many cities and towns in Ecuador lacking a good supplier of fruits and vegetables.
