Lovearianism and Beingism
Believe it or not, there are a few more levels to explore. These are the levels I personally refer to as “Lovearianism” and “Beingism”. Some people refer to them as different states of Samadhi. We can also look at them as a form of “oxygen-fasting”.
Most people believe that humans are likely to develop serious brain damage after five to ten minutes without breathing. Typical estimates show that, after one minute without breathing, brain cells begin to die, after three minutes, brain damage is likely to occur, after 10 minutes, many brain cells are dead and the patient is unlikely to recover, and after 15 minutes recovery is virtually impossible. Of course, there are exceptions to most rules, and these estimates don’t seem to apply to every person in the world.
According to the Guinness World Record’s official website, the record for longest time without breathing is 24 minutes and 3 seconds. This was achieved by Aleix Segura Vendrell in Barcelona, Spain, on 28 February 2016. (1) http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/longest-time-breath-held-voluntarily-(male])
Previews world record holders include German free diver Tom Sietas, who held his breath underwater for 22 minutes and 22 seconds in 2012. The record holder before that was Dane Stig Severinsen, who held his breath for 22 minutes. This reveals that the estimates scientist have given us don’t reflect the absolute truth.
We can also share stories from David Blaine, a modern magician, illusionist, and endurance artist, who held his breath for 17 minutes, live, during Oprah’s TV show. Before accomplishing this feat, Blaine trained for months to increase his lung capacity, reducing his resting heart rate to just 38 beats per minute. You can hear the story directly from him by watching his TedTalk.
