Fruit Based Diets and Wildlife Conservation
Fruit-based diets reduce the amount of animal suffering across the planet. The effects not only affect farm animals, but birds, insects and all types of wildlife. Most people don’t consider these creatures when talking about the impact diets have on innocent beings.
Every single day, hundreds of acres of rain-forest are cut down to make room for unnecessary animal factories, and mono-crops such as grains, which are used for feed. These actions rob us of our beautiful forests, trees, and the oxygen they produce. They also displace millions of animals of diverse forms and sizes. Most of these creatures die in the process, like refugees and emigrants escaping a war zone. This results in the extinction of thousands of species around the globe.
According to the World Wild Life Organization, “Forests cover 31% of the land area of our planet. Some 46 to 58 thousand square miles of forest are lost each year, which is equivalent to 48 football fields every minute”. In the Amazon, around 17% of the forest has been lost in the last 50 years, mostly due to forest conversion for cattle ranching. (1)
Other sources estimate that “70% of our world’s plant and animal species live in forests. Whenever we clear acres, they lose their habitat and die”. They estimate that “up to 28,000 species can go extinct in the next quarter century due to deforestation”, and that “by the year 2030, we might only have 10% of Rainforests left and it can all disappear in a hundred years.” (2)
Deforestation also contributes to 15% percent of annual global greenhouse gas emissions. It leads to soil erosion, floods, and climate imbalances. (3) Omnivorus diets require destroying forests, fruit-based diets require growing forests. Do the math. Give Fruit a Chance.
