Eating in Good Company
We should eat alone, or surrounded by people we love. That is because our holistic being is always consuming and digesting everything in our environment. This includes the food we eat as well as the words, actions, thoughts, and emotions of those around us.
The people who love us are likely to treat us nicely and speak kind words. These people are likely to be positive around us, and surround us with positive thoughts and emotions. When we sit to eat with them, we are fed by the food we as well as by their company.
That is why its better to be alone than in bad company. We often make the mistake of spending time with people we don’t like, just because we are uncomfortable being alone. Every time I do this, I end up regretting it. Now days I am much conscious about this, and prefer to be alone than to force myself into an environment with people that are not conductive to my holistic health.
My parents always insisted that humans are communal creatures. That means that we are meant to be in company with other human beings. I think they are right to a certain point. That is why I choose to eat with people I love, whenever possible. On the other hand, there is little benefit to eating with people who are not conducive to a happy and peaceful experience.
Before we move on, it is important to explain that sometimes it may be best to avoid eating with people we love. For example, those who are transitioning from eating animal products may want to refrain from attending some meals with their family and friends. This is especially important if we find it hard to resist the temptations from animal products, or the criticism attracted by following a vegan, raw vegan or fruit based diet.
Ideally, you’ll think its possible to spend time with your family and friends, while saying “no thanks” to the food your loved ones are sharing. Being able to share meals with people who are not vegan might inspire them to look deeper into this topic. You can always bring a bunch of bananas or a handful of apples. All you gotta do is be yourself.
However, if you foresee being tempted by animal products, perhaps its best to pass on your loved ones’ invitation, and choose a different environment for your meals. You can always spend time with family and friends without having to share food. The people we love may be great company, but sometimes that company is not conducive to our current goals, or in alignment with our present values. The key is to always live in connection with our heart, know what and why we are doing what we are doing.
