Becoming a Fruitarian
My story evolves just like yours: 1% history, 99% mystery.
I was born and raised in Patagonia, Argentina, in a city called Bariloche. It is located near the south-most point of South America, and I like to call it, “The End of the World”.
My parents were typical middle-class citizens. They worked hard every day, living a good life, with its fair share of struggles and tribulations. They both raised me with love and care, giving me enough freedom to explore my life, while setting healthy boundaries to ensure my safety. I am proud to say that, in my humble opinion, they did a great job.
I have always been the curious and creative type, highly intellectual, and easily distracted. Throughout my journey I took the liberty of exploring the many forms and flavors this world has to offer. I have traveled through more than twenty countries and lived in countless cities. I probably switched careers a dozen times in my life. I have also explored most of the major religions, and have been spending most of my adult life in the spiritual world.
I have an immense appreciation for science, and a latent love for mathematics and statistics. I get lost in dance, art, and writing. Music is my greatest passion.
More importantly, I am addicted to learning. I have dedicated the past six years to exploring the world of health, fitness and well-being. I spent three years of my life studying alternative medicine and went on to get a degree in holistic health. On top of that I have certifications in different styles of yoga, massage therapy and other healing modalities. My obsession with holistic health is what lead me to discovering the raw vegan and fruit based diets.
The transition from omnivore to fruitarian was an ongoing process that took several years. The first step was giving up red meat, after that I surrendered chicken and fish. Soon after I began to embrace veganism, reducing my consumption of all animal products. A few months later I learned about raw veganism and started to eliminate cooked foods from my diet. Eventually, I realized that fruit was the best food source available, which lead me to minimize my consumption of mosts foods, including vegetables, nuts and seeds.
This transition was everything but smooth. There has been challenges and struggles from the very beginning to the present moment. Doubt, confusion, mixed messages, lack of discipline, and social pressure have placed their road blocks along the way. Many times I have fallen from my path, returning to old dietary habits that no longer serve me.
In the last year year I consumed animal products a handful of times. Being as mindful as possible while making those decisions. I always tried to feel loving about it, but found it challenging, and noticed regret every time. It is impossible to disregard the effect our choices make on ourselves, the animals, the earth and humanity as a whole. We all have infinite room for improvement, we can all feel the difference between right and wrong. I pray my heart will continue to guide me in the right direction.
When I first got into veganism, I thought that was the top of the ladder. I thought nothing could be better in terms of healthy nutrition and ethical food consumption. Back then, raw veganism seemed too extreme, and when I first heard about fruitarianism, I started laughing out loud, I thought it was a joke.
How could humans live on nothing but fruit? The idea sounded crazy, it was ridiculous. I began to make fun about it, telling those who mocked my vegan views that “I would soon become a fruitarian”. I guess humor was foreshadowing the future, wouldn’t be the first time.
