Where to Get Produce?
It is ideal to get all our produce straight from the source. However, not all of us have the privilege of living in a farm, or having a substantial amount of fruits and vegetables growing in our homes. This is why most of us need to get our food from other sources.
Most people buy their produce from grocery stores. Whenever possible, it is best to get our groceries from farmers market or wholesale distributors, this is a way to get fresher produce and reduce transportation.
The availability of produce will depend on where we live. Not every region in the world is suitable to farm fruit and vegetables. Meaning that most people won’t even have access to a farm or a farmers market.
Even if we have access to freshly farmed produce, we may only be able to get it during certain months of the year. Wholesale distributors aren’t so common either, since they only tend to be located near big cities.
For the everyday American who lives in a mid-size city, the common places to get produce are grocery stores and super markets. Some markets are better than others. The now famous Whole Foods supermarket tends to be a favorite, when it comes to finding a large selection of organic produce.
Some people may complain that Whole Foods is an expensive option, or that Amazon is trying to take over the world. This is still better than purchasing low quality produce or no fruits or vegetables at all. Other groceries in town may have high quality organic fruits and vegetables, and lower prices. A favorite of mine is Natural Grocers. My advice is for you to visiting your local grocery stores, and find out which one has the best options for you.
Farmers markets are better than supermarkets, because they allow us to get our produce straight from the growers. These markets can be expensive, but its easy to get discounts for bulk purchases. We must also consider our location, the farmers we are buying from, and our ability to bargain.
Some supermarkets offer bulk deals as well. I know many places that offer a 10% discount for a box of fruits or vegetables. These deals are super convenient, especially when buying bananas, papayas, mangos, watermelons, and oranges. You can use this deal to purchase food that is high in calories, and takes a long time to go bad.
Its possible to get even better deals at wholesale distributors. These are located near big cities. Some of these distributors may even focus on selling organic fruits and vegetables. This may be the ideal place to shop, because we can get a great variety of produce at a very low price. These places (sometimes) give away cases for free, or almost free, since they are unable to sell damaged or overripe produce.
