What about Dehydrated Foods?
Dehydrated foods are another tricky option. We already talked much about the importance of water in our food, and the effect dehydration has on it. At the same time, dehydrated foods are very convenient for many reasons.
For starters, dehydrating foods allows us to preserve fruits and vegetables that would otherwise be completely wasted. If we buy an entire box of bananas to have abundance in our kitchen, it is likely we might not be able to eat all of them before they go bad. That is when we have the option to either freeze them, or dehydrate them. If we dehydrate them, we can store them anywhere, and eat them many months into the future.
Dehydrating food also makes it convenient for traveling. By removing the water contained in fruits and vegetables we reduce their space and weight. That is why dehydrated fruit is one of the top choices for those going on ultralight hikes and backpacking trips.
The third most common use of dehydrated foods is in the making of raw gourmet meals. The dehydrator allows us to create a sturdy base for raw pizzas and other treats.
Some people might think of dehydrated foods as raw foods because they have not been heated over 48°C. Others see them as non-raw because they have been processed. There are pros and cons to dehydrating food, just like there are pros and cons to everything we do. We must keep exploring to understand what feels right for each one of us.
