Eliminate Animal Products
Animal products include animal flesh and other byproducts such as eggs, milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, and honey. Producing them is harmful to animals, and their consumption is mostly unnecessary. Sadly, most people around the world consume animal products every day. Even worse, there are countries such as Ecuador, where the vast majority of the population consumes animal products in every-single-meal. It is actually hard to find food that doesn’t contain animal products, even an order of fried potatoes is served with sausage as a default. No gracias.
Dairy is by far the most addictive animal product available. This is because all dairy products contain casein, a protein that, during digestion, releases opiates called “casomorphins”. These casomorphins have been found to cause addictive behavior, and promote the consumption of dairy products. Studies have also shown that, the more processed and fatty the food, the more addictive it is. This is why many scientists compare cheese to crack cocaine, in terms of its addictive properties. (1)
Casomorphin is natures’ trick to make sure that baby calves continue to drink plenty of cow milk during their breastfeeding period. For baby calves, casein is an essential ingredient of life, it is what makes sure they grow big and healthy. For humans, it is an addictive compound that can lead to poor disease, and maybe even death.
Take a moment and think about it. Why do so many people struggle so much to stop eating dairy products such as cheese? How come there are so many humans thinking we need rotten liquid from a cow’s breasts to be healthy?
Yogurt, ice cream, sour cream, and butter, are just as addictive as milk and cheese. If we want to overcome our addiction to animal products, we need to get rid of them once and for all. Substitutes like vegan cheese and vegan ice-cream may be great options to get started. Milk substitutes like rice milk, almond milk, and hemp milk can also be used at the beginning of the transition. Eventually we must give up all processed foods, to achieve better health, and improve our environment.
It is important to note that dairy substitute products marked as vegan may still contain casein. This is why we want to read the labels and watch out for ingredients such as calcium caseinate, potassium caseinate, and sodium caseinate.
In the long run we are better off avoiding all processed foods, and sticking to fresh and organic whole foods. You can also make these substitute vegan options at home from whole foods such as nuts and seeds. All you have do is go online and look for recipes such as “raw vegan cheese”, or “home made almond milk”.
It is recommended to eliminate eggs and honey as well. There are vegan substitutes for these products too. At the same time, we want to reduce our consumption of all processed foods. Most of these vegan substitutes contain unnatural ingredients, that are likely to have unknown and unhealthy reactions in our bodies.
A better solution is to replace eggs with choices like tofu. For baking, we can use flax seeds and chia seeds instead of eggs. The sweetness of honey can be replaced with fruit. It may not have the same consistency or flavor, but it will be a healthier and more beneficial choice.
Remember that we don’t need to make these changes all at once. This is why we call this a period of transition. The goal here is to continue to move in the right direction.
Make positive changes every day. Keep aiming towards your goal, and be gentle with yourself. Remember that we are dealing with substances we grew up accustomed to eating every day. Some of these substances are as addictive as alcohol, cigarettes, and cocaine. These addictions can are difficult to quit, but its essential to do so to live a healthier life.
