Fruit Isn’t the Problem
Way too many people blame fruit for unwanted weight gain, unaware that statistics show the exact opposite. Once again, let us remember that the large majority of the people in the United States rarely consume any fresh fruit.
In fact, research shows that between the years 2000 and 2014, the average consumption of fresh fruit by an individual in the United States was around 130 pounds. Divided by 365 days, this makes up to 0.36 pounds of fruit per day, or 163 grams. To put this in perspective, a typical apple weights 100 grams.
Another study released by the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 38% of the U.S. population reported eating less than one serving of fruits and vegetables per day. The media intake of fruits per day was less than one. (1) Its clear that an apple a day isn’t enough to keep the doctor away.
As we dig further we learn that more than a third of American adults suffer from obesity, while another third is overweight. The estimated annual medical cost for obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008, this number has continued to grow. (2) Now more than ever it is time to Give Fruit a Chance.
Yes, fruit can be the solution to obesity and uncontrollable weight gain, an issue that is affecting adults and children all over the world. By opening our minds to this idea we see that fruit is the perfect food to help people reach their healthy weight. The following are a few of many ways in which fruit helps people lose weight and become healthier again.
#1 – Fresh fruits are mostly water. It is easy to feel full without eating much. This helps people avoid overeating, or consuming more calories than our bodies can process at once.
#2 – Most raw fruits are high on fiber. This nutrient slows down the digestion process, helping us feel fuller and avoid eating more than we can take.
#3 – Fruit is an effective detoxifier. It helps the process of breaking down fat to get rid of toxins in the tissues.
#4 – Some fruits, such as watermelon, are rich sources of an amino acid called “arginine”, which helps burn fat.
#5 – Most raw fruits, aside from a few exceptions like durian and avocado, have a low fat content. Unhealthy fat intake is one of the main reasons people become overweight. By following a low-fat, fruit-based diet, people are likely to lose weight quickly.
#6 – The water in fruit is a universal solvent. That means that water dissolves more substances than any other solvent. As it passes through our digestive system, it cleanses and washes away food remains associated with unhealthy weight.
