An Endless Road
Some hard-core fruitarians strive to live the absolute fruitarian lifestyle, eating nothing but fruit, and harming no living beings. Other people settle for a fruit based diet, allowing vegetables and cooked foods in their diet plan, and maybe even including some animal products every once in a while.
Each one of us can choose how far we want to go, and when we want to do it. We all have different starting points. We have different bodies, minds, environment, resources, and opportunities available. Not all of us can leave our jobs and move to the tropics, to work on a fruit farm.
I was lucky to learn about fruitarianism with such an open mind. I dared to leave my job in search for a fruitarian lifestyle in Hawaii. I was also lucky to come up with enough income, to extend my trip, and live in Ecuador for two months, as I finished the first drafts of this book.
Some luck, along with my persistence to eat mostly fruit while living in the mainland, allowed me to experiment with raw vegan and fruit based diets for over three years. During this time I went through many ups and downs, struggling to understand and trust what I was being called towards.
It’s impossible to know how much fruit I ate over the past three years. If I had to guess, I would say 90% of my meals have fallen on the raw vegan category, with 70% to 80% of my calories derived from fruits. I have spent consecutive months eating nothing but raw vegan foods. I have also spent entire weeks eating nothing but fruit, like the time I spent two weeks in Hawaii eating nothing but papayas.
During these years, I had the chance to learn much about fruit, diets, and interpersonal relationships. I don’t know how much better I would feel today, or how much more successful I would, be if I had only eaten fruit and nothing else. I like to think my stepping in and out of raw vegan and fruit-only diets, has allowed me to understand other people’s point of view.
At the same time, I know in my heart that raw vegan and fruit based diets are best for me, and for many people, animals, plants, and the environment. This is why I stay focused, keeping my efforts on understanding these ideas, and sharing them with my community.
Now days I eat less cooked foods and animal products than ever, even during winter times in the mountains of Colorado. I feel great eating this way. My intake of animal products is absolutely minimal. Cooked foods don’t interest or serve me as much as they once did.
I feel better on a raw vegan diet that is based on consuming large quantities of fruit. My body feels better, my mood is better, I have more energy and creative drive. I have excellent friends, my brain works great, and I haven’t had any serious health issues since I started walking this path… knock on fruit.
Those fruitarians, who have eaten more fruit, for a longer period of time, may share better stories than mine. Maybe those who healed cancer with fruit based diets are better role models.
My part is to share their anecdotes, and weave them with scientific findings and data. My work is to collect all the evidence we have to support, an increase, consumption of fruit in our society. My mission is to convince you to Give Fruit a Chance. Even if that simply means eating one more piece of fruit, and noticing how it feels.
